Granny Flat Addition

Granny Flat or Outbuilding Additions, Getting Connected to NBN

The addition of a new granny flat or outbuilding on subdivided land or dual access blocks, that have their own unique address can get their own connection to the NBN broadband access network, if it is available in the area.

Getting connected to NBN can be done by initially having a service plan design prepared for the unit. The service plan shows the planned location of the Lead in Conduit (LIC) that runs from the unit to the boundary entry point (the LIC will need to be constructed once approved).

Once the service plan is ready, an NBN New Development Application will need to be lodged, with the service plan uploaded to the application. The application should be submitted at least 3 months prior to the occupancy date to ensure it is ready for service. Choosing an NBN trained supplier to design the service plan and submit the application, will fast track the application process, ensure it is to standard the first time and get works underway sooner. Next, NBN will asses the plan, provide feedback if adjustments need to be made, approve the design, collect the application fee ($600/unit) and send out the council letter.

After the approval of the service plan, the installation of the planned Lead in Conduit (LIC) can begin. Installation needs to be to standard to avoid service interruptions, added remediation costs and delays. An NBN trained supplier can help ensure it is built right the first time to standard.

NBN will come out to connect the access network to the property boundary and mount the NBN box on the side of the unit. Another NBN visit will be made to mount the indoor NBN connection box and activate the device. Once activated, you can contact your preferred internet service provider (ISP) to connect you with the plan of your choice.

Granny flats sharing the same address with the primary dwelling

Granny flats or outbuildings that share the same address as the primary dwelling on the lot, are not eligible to have their own connection to the NBN broadband access network. To connect the unit with its own connection, it must have its own unique address identifier. In this instance the connection from the primary dwelling will need to be extended to be shared with the granny flat or outbuilding. A registered cabler can help get this done.
